The Bethany region of Jordan (also referred to as ‘Beth abra') is famously known as the place where John the Baptist lived, worked and baptized believers. In John 1:28, the Bible makes reference to "...Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing." It is a belief held by many that Jesus went to John the Baptist when he was in Bethany - and it was here in Jordan where Jesus Christ was baptized.
Today, the water of the Jordan River, where Jesus is believed to have been baptized, represents one of the most famous sites in the world for Christians. As such it is one of the area's most popular attractions for those travelling to the holy land. To learn more about visiting the Baptism site in Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan visit the official website.
Wadi El Mujib -
It is thanks to its breath-taking views that the Wadi Mujib is regarded as Jordan's equivalent of The Grand Canyon. Swimming, jumping, abseiling and floating are all ways to enjoy this incredible valley, which offers an unforgettable day out for adventurous visitors. Its sheer red walls tower skyward while its width is filled with running water, which plunges through to an awe-inspiring 15 metre waterfall.
Beautiful pools can be found near the confluence of Wadi Mujib and Wadi el Hidan, tempting the trekker to enjoy a refreshing and invigorating swim. A fantastic trip to the area's national nature reserve can be undertaken in a couple of hours. Don't forget to bring along sturdy shoes and a camera, as you're bound to enjoy exploring the incredible natural surroundings and capturing them all to enjoy once you're home again.
Mount Nebo -
Rising over 700m above the Jordan Valley, Mount Nebo offers spectacular views of the Promised Land as seen by Moses. Given its association with Moses, Mount Nebo has long been an important place of Christian pilgrimage - and excavations led by the Franciscans revealed artefact that have served to make it even more important.
Anyone climbing to the summit will be able to visit the Memorial Church of Moses. This splendid church incorporates both modern and ancient features, including a number of Byzantine mosaics dating back to around 530 AD. It is at the summit that visitors can also reflect on a modern sculpture by an Italian artist representing Moses' staff and Jesus' words in John 3: "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."
